In 1610 William Stewart was given 1,000 acres and the old O'Donnell castle for his military service. In return Stewart was to build a fortified town - RAMELTON. Stewart's Reformation Church was in existence from 1616 - 1826. The ruins of the abbey and outbuildings are next to the graveyard, known locally as the "Old Burying Ground" or Tullyaughnish. It has been used by both the Church of Ireland and Presbyterians for over 300 years. Many Presbyterians are buried in Church of Ireland graveyards because the law prevented non-CI congregations from maintaining their own cemeteries. Prior to the 19th century, dissenting ministers were not allowed to perform burials unless a CI rector was present.
