The Pence Cemetery is located on the Arnold Dowdy farm nine miles south of Union, West Virginia, Rt. 219, 1 mile west on Rt. 122. It is nestled on a hilltop among pine trees. There were 28 graves, 6 children, 4 boys and 2 girls. The children range in age from 10 days to 5 years old. The 15 adults that had marked grave stones range in age from 23 to 91. Seven graves were not counted because they were illegible or there were not dates on the headstones, and four of the headstones had no markings at all. Of the 15 adults, it is believed that 7 are women and 8 are men. I came to that conclusion believing that all the stones with initials such as G.W. or W.W. Pence were men. The earliest date on a stone is May 26, 1840 and the last date was November 9, 1952. Both were children and both were boys. There is a Revolutionary War Veteran buried in the Pence Cemetery, the stone reads Lieutenant Jacob Pence Jr., Virginia Militia Revolutionary War. There were no dates on the stone. There is a story told about the fence around the cemetery, it seems that some of the Pence family members couldn't agree on the kind of fence, so they settled the disagreement by putting two kinds of fence. As shown on the attached diagram, graves 2, 3, and 4 are enclosed with the old style ornate wrought iron fence and is enclosed within the woven wire fence that encloses the entire cemetery. There are 4 stones that have 2 or more names, three of these are four sided with names on all sides. They are indicated on the diagram by the shaded blocks. The enclosed area of the Pence Cemetery measures 84' X 56'. The number alongside each name corresponds to the same number as indicated on the attached diagram. This cemetery is overgrown in a briar patch. Visited by Anna Young in 2019. There were only two stones visible, the rest were too hard and too painful to reach.
